Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford started acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she wasn't a good fit. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but in the meantime, she had already made her debut on television in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining the attention of her peers.
